I’m Devin Orsi, owner of Iron Bear & Co., a family-owned junk removal, cleanout, and demolition company in Canonsburg. Established 2015 (formerly Richie’s Hauling). In the fall, a lot of South Hills homeowners start looking at what’s in the backyard: the wooden swing set the kids outgrew, a playset with a cracked slide, or a fort that’s starting to lean.
If you live in South Park and you’ve been staring at an old playset through the kitchen window, fall is a good time to deal with it. Here’s how to tell when it’s time to take it down, what’s involved if you do it yourself, and how our crew handles swing set and playset removal from start to finish. Estimates are no-obligation.

Signs it’s time to take the swing set down
Wood, metal, and plastic all weather in western PA rain, snow, and summer sun. A few signs a playset has done its job:
- Soft or rotted wood. Push a screwdriver into the posts near the ground. If it sinks in easily, the wood is breaking down where it matters most.
- Loose, rusted, or missing hardware. Bolts that spin, brackets that have rusted through, and swing hangers that squeak and wobble are worth taking seriously.
- Cracked slides and brittle plastic. Sun-faded plastic can crack and leave sharp edges.
- Splinters, leaning, or a sagging top beam. If the frame racks side to side when someone swings, the joints are worn.
- Nobody uses it anymore. The kids have moved on, and you’d like the yard back.
Why fall is a good time for playset removal
Once the leaves are down and the kids are back in school, the yard is quieter and easier to work in. Taking it down before winter means it won’t spend another season soaking up snowmelt, and the lawn underneath gets a chance to recover. When the ground freezes, digging out footings gets harder, so October and November are usually a better window than January.
Can you take it down yourself?
Plenty of homeowners do. Here’s what to plan for:
- Hardware fights back. Bolts and lag screws are often rusted in place. Expect to need a socket set, a reciprocating saw, and patience.
- Beams are heavy and awkward. Have a second set of hands, and keep kids and pets well away.
- Footings and anchors. Some sets sit on the ground, some are staked, and some have posts set in concrete. Concrete footings take real digging to remove. If you plan to dig deeper than just pulling stakes, Pennsylvania requires a call to PA One Call (811) a few business days before you dig so underground utility lines get marked.
- Disposal is the hard part. Once it’s apart, you’re left with a pile of lumber, metal, and plastic. Curbside trash service usually has limits on how much bulky material and lumber it will take at once, so check with your hauler or the township before you set a whole playset at the curb.
- Don’t burn the wood. Many older playsets were built with pressure-treated lumber. The EPA advises against burning treated wood because of the chemicals it releases, so a backyard fire pit isn’t the answer.
How we handle swing set and playset removal
When you’d rather skip the rusted bolts and the trips to the dump, this is how a removal works with Iron Bear:
- No-obligation estimate first. Send us a few photos of the playset from a couple of angles, plus the path from the backyard to the street or driveway. Let us know if there are concrete footings and whether you want them removed. We’ll give you a clear quote before any work starts.
- Take it apart safely. Our crew disassembles or cuts the structure down in sections, so nothing comes crashing down on your fence, shed, or landscaping.
- Footings, if you want them out. If we’ve agreed to remove the anchors or footings, we take care of them and fill the holes back in so they aren’t a tripping hazard.
- Careful carry-out. We do all the lifting and loading. We’re careful going through gates and along side yards.
- Sort for recycling. Metal frames, chains, and hardware get recycled whenever possible. A set in good condition can sometimes be donated or passed along. The rest gets disposed of properly.
- Clean up the spot. We rake and pick up loose screws, washers, and broken pieces so you’re not finding bolts with the mower next spring.
That’s white-glove service to us: on time for the window we schedule, careful around your home and yard, and a clean finish. We won’t leave your doorstep until you’re satisfied.
Other backyard structures we take down
A swing set is often just the start. While we’re in the yard, we can also remove trampolines, playhouses, old fencing sections, small sheds, and worn-out decks through our demolition and removal service. If you’re weighing a bigger backyard tear-out, our guide to shed removal and outdoor structure demolition walks through what’s involved. And if the yard also needs a fall cleanup, our yard waste removal crew can haul brush and leaves in the same visit (more in our post on fall yard debris cleanup).
Crew removal or a dumpster?
If the playset is part of a bigger do-it-yourself project, like tearing out a deck over a few weekends, a roll-off from our dumpster rental service can make more sense. If you just want the swing set gone, a crew removal is simpler: we take it down, haul it away, and clean up in one visit.
Serving South Park and the South Hills
We’re based on South Central Ave in Canonsburg and work throughout South Park Township, Bethel Park, Upper St. Clair, Peters Township, and the rest of the South Hills and Washington County. Our junk removal in South Park page covers everything else we haul locally, from furniture to full residential cleanouts.
Swing set removal FAQ
Do you remove concrete footings too?
We can. Let us know about footings when you ask for an estimate so we can include them in your quote. We’ll fill the holes once they’re out.
Will you take a metal swing set as well as a wooden one?
Yes. Wooden, metal, and mixed playsets, along with slides, swings, canopies, and attached forts. Metal parts are recycled whenever possible.
Can my old playset be donated?
Sometimes. A solid, complete set may be worth donating or giving away. A rotted or broken one is usually headed for recycling and disposal. We’ll tell you honestly which is which.
How much does swing set removal cost?
It depends on the size and material of the set, whether there are footings, and how easy it is to reach. Estimates are no-obligation. Send a few photos and we’ll give you a clear quote.
