Iron Bear & Co. is a family-owned junk removal, cleanout, demolition, and dumpster rental company based in Canonsburg. Established 2015 (formerly Richie’s Hauling). Every fall, a lot of Collier Township households look at the calendar, count the weeks until Thanksgiving, and realize the guest room is not really a guest room anymore. Somewhere along the way it became the place for the treadmill nobody uses, boxes from the last move, an old dresser, outgrown kids’ things, and electronics that stopped working years ago.
If you want that room back before family arrives, here is a practical plan: how to sort it quickly, what Collier Township’s curbside service will and will not take, and when it makes sense to have a crew carry everything out in one trip.
Why the spare room fills up
A spare room is the easiest place in the house to put something “for now.” Unlike the garage or basement, it is warm, dry, and close by, so it collects anything that does not have a home. The result usually includes a mix of:
- Old furniture: a futon, an extra mattress and box spring, a desk, a bookcase, or a dresser with a broken drawer
- Exercise equipment that turned into a clothes rack
- Boxes of paperwork, decorations, toys, and clothing
- Old TVs, computers, monitors, and printers
- Leftovers from projects, like spare flooring, paint cans, and trim
None of it is hard to deal with on its own. The challenge is the volume, the heavy pieces, and the stairs, all with a deadline attached.
A simple plan to clear the room in a weekend
- Set a date and work backward. Pick the day you want the room ready, then schedule the haul-away a few days before it so you have time to clean and set up the bed.
- Start with three zones. Mark off space for keep, donate, and go. Anything you have not used in a year and would not buy again usually belongs in the last two piles.
- Handle the personal items yourself. Paperwork, photos, and keepsakes need your eyes. Go through those first, and shred anything with account numbers or personal information.
- Leave the heavy lifting. Do not wrestle a dresser or treadmill down the stairs alone. Mark what goes and let a crew carry it.
- Clean once the room is empty. With the floor clear, it is easy to vacuum, patch a wall, or take care of a repair before guests arrive.
What Collier Township curbside collection will and won’t take
Collier Township’s residential trash is collected weekly by Republic Services under the township’s contract. According to the township’s garbage and recycling information and its 2026 collection guide, a few rules matter for a cleanout:
- One bulk item per month. Residents can set out one bulk item at the curb each month. Multiple bulk items at once require a special collection scheduled through Republic Services for a fee.
- Bag weight limits. Household waste should be bagged, with bags weighing no more than 35 pounds.
- Timing. Trash goes out after 6 p.m. the evening before collection and no later than 6 a.m. on collection day.
- Appliances with refrigerant. Items such as dehumidifiers, window air conditioners, and mini fridges are only picked up with a sticker certifying the refrigerant has been removed.
- Electronics are not recyclables. Electronics are on the unacceptable list for curbside recycling, and Pennsylvania’s Covered Device Recycling Act keeps TVs, computers, monitors, and similar devices out of household trash.
For a single chair, the monthly bulk allowance may be enough. For a room with a futon, a mattress set, a dresser, a treadmill, and a pile of electronics, you would be waiting months, or paying for a special pickup and still carrying everything to the curb yourself. Rules can change, so check the township website or call Republic Services if you plan to use curbside collection.
Items that need special handling
- Mattresses and box springs. Bulky and awkward on stairs. See our mattress removal page.
- TVs and computers. These need to go to proper electronics recycling. Our e-waste removal service takes them with the rest of the room.
- Exercise equipment. Treadmills and weight benches are heavy and often need partial disassembly to get through doorways.
- Paint and chemicals. Collier’s guide allows empty cans or fully dried paint at the curb. Liquid paint and household chemicals need a household hazardous waste option, so set them aside and ask us what we can take.
When a junk removal crew makes more sense
Hiring a crew is usually the faster choice when the room holds more than one or two large items, when the room is upstairs or down a narrow staircase, or when you simply do not have the time before the holidays. With residential junk removal from Iron Bear & Co., our team does the lifting, loading, and carrying, including furniture, mattresses, electronics, and boxes, and we leave the space swept clean. We treat your home with care on the way out, which matters when guests are about to arrive.
We recycle or donate what we can whenever possible, so usable furniture and household items do not automatically end up in a landfill. If the room includes a bed frame, desk, or dresser, our furniture removal page covers how we handle larger pieces.
If you are clearing other spaces too, our guides to attic cleanouts before winter and old carpet removal cover the other projects that tend to come up this time of year. We also serve neighboring communities, including Bridgeville.
How to get ready for pickup day
- Take photos of the room and send them with your request so we can give an accurate, no-obligation estimate.
- Put keepers in another room or label them clearly.
- Let us know about stairs, tight turns, or items that need to be disassembled.
- Tell us about anything special, such as a heavy safe or a piece that needs to go to a family member instead.
Spare room cleanout FAQ
How long does a spare room cleanout take?
It depends on how much is in the room and how easy it is to reach. Send photos and we will give you a realistic idea of timing along with your estimate.
Do I have to carry items to the curb or garage?
No. Our crew removes items from wherever they are in the house, including upstairs bedrooms and basements.
Can you take old TVs and computers?
Yes. Electronics are part of our e-waste service and are handled separately from regular junk.
Do I need to be home?
For a room inside the house, someone usually needs to let us in. We can work out the details when you schedule.
