Iron Bear & Co. is a family-owned and local dumpster rental, junk removal, cleanout, and demolition company based in Canonsburg. Established 2015 (formerly Richie’s Hauling). If you live in Washington, PA or anywhere in Washington County and you’re wondering whether it’s too late in the year to rent a dumpster, it isn’t.
Plenty of projects happen in late fall and winter: winter remodels, clearing out before the holidays, storm cleanup, and getting a rental unit turned over between tenants. Cold, wet weather just changes how you plan the rental. Here’s what to know in Washington about placement, snow, frozen debris, and permits before the first hard frost. Every estimate is a no-obligation estimate.
Why late fall and winter projects still need a roll-off
Most of the projects that call for a dumpster don’t stop when the leaves come down:
- Indoor remodels. Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and flooring jobs move indoors once it gets cold, and tear-out debris needs somewhere to go. If you’re planning a bigger tear-out, our interior demolition guide walks through it.
- Holiday prep. A lot of families want the garage, basement, or spare room cleared before guests arrive.
- Storm and yard cleanup. Fall wind brings down limbs, fencing, and old outdoor furniture that won’t fit in a trash can.
- Rental turnovers and moves. Landlords and families moving in or out don’t get to pick the season.
Our dumpster rental service covers all of these, and our Washington, PA dumpster rental page has local details.
Placement when the ground is wet or frozen
Where the dumpster sits matters more in late fall than in summer. Fall rain softens lawns and gravel edges, and a cycle of frost and thaw can turn a firm spot into a soft one in a day.
- Choose the driveway over the lawn. Wet or thawing grass ruts under a loaded container. A flat, paved stretch is almost always the better choice this time of year.
- Protect the surface. When we place a dumpster on a driveway, we set it on protective boards as part of our white-glove standard. Tell us about any cracks or soft spots before delivery so we can plan around them.
- Look up, too. Wet snow weighs branches down. Check that low limbs and wires won’t be in the way when the truck tilts the container on and off.
- Leave room to load. Put the opening where you can reach it from the house or garage without crossing icy grass with an armful of debris.
Snow, ice, and keeping debris dry
Weather is the biggest difference between a summer rental and a winter one. A few habits make the whole rental easier:
- Clear the approach before delivery and pickup. Shovel or plow the driveway and the path where the truck backs in. The driver needs a clear, safe approach to set the container down and to pull it back out.
- Cover it when you’re not loading. A tarp keeps rain and snow out. Water adds weight, and wet debris can ice up on the floor of the container, which makes dumping harder.
- Don’t shovel snow into it. Snow and ice are just water weight. Keep the space for the debris you actually need gone.
- Salt your path, not the container. Keep the walkway from your door to the dumpster safe so you and your helpers aren’t slipping while you carry loads.
If a storm is coming the week of your delivery or pickup, call us and we’ll talk through the timing with you.
What goes in and what stays out
Winter cleanouts turn up some items that don’t belong in a roll-off. Household junk, old furniture, flooring, drywall, wood, and general remodel debris are the usual loads. Hazardous materials, chemicals, and regulated waste stay out. TVs and computer monitors can’t go in household trash in Pennsylvania, so set those aside for our e-waste removal service instead. For the full list, see what can and can’t go into a dumpster.
Not sure about one item? Ask when you book. It’s easier to sort it out on the phone than to pull it back out of the container later.
Permits in Washington, PA
If the dumpster sits entirely on your own driveway or property, a permit typically isn’t needed. If the only option is the street or a public right-of-way inside the City of Washington, a permit from the city may be required. If you live in one of the surrounding townships, like South Strabane, North Franklin, or Canton, check with that township’s office, since each one sets its own rules. HOAs and landlords can have their own restrictions too. We’re glad to talk through local placement when you call.
Dumpster rental or a white-glove crew?
A roll-off is the right fit when you want to work at your own pace over several days: a remodel, a garage cleanout over a few weekends, or a contractor job. If you’d rather not carry anything through the cold yourself, our crew can do the lifting and loading for you through residential junk removal. Plenty of jobs use both: a dumpster for the ongoing remodel debris and a crew for the heavy items. Our dumpster rental vs. junk removal guide helps you decide. For remodel tear-out and building materials, see our construction debris removal page.
We don’t list sizes or prices here. Call, tell us what the project is, and we’ll match the right option to the job.
Winter dumpster rental FAQ
Can you deliver a dumpster when there’s snow on the ground?
Tell us about the conditions when you book. What the driver needs is a cleared, safe approach and a firm, level spot. If the driveway is plowed and the path is clear, winter delivery works the same way it does the rest of the year.
Will a dumpster damage my driveway in cold weather?
Any heavy container can mark a driveway if it’s set down directly. That’s why ours go on protective boards when they’re placed on a driveway. Let us know about existing cracks before delivery.
Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Washington, PA?
Typically not on private property. Street or right-of-way placement may need a permit from the City of Washington or your township. Check with them before you book.
Do you serve Washington and the rest of Washington County?
Yes. We’re based in Canonsburg and serve Washington, McMurray, Peters Township, the South Hills, and communities across Washington County.
Is there any obligation with the estimate?
No. Every estimate is a no-obligation estimate, and you’ll get an upfront quote before anything is scheduled.
