I’m Devin Orsi, owner of Iron Bear & Co., a family-owned junk removal, cleanout, demolition, and dumpster rental company based in Canonsburg. Established 2015 (formerly Richie’s Hauling). Fall is when a lot of families in McMurray and Peters Township finally replace the old guest-room mattress, set up a bed for visiting relatives, or clear out a spare room before the holidays. The new mattress shows up in a box. The old one? That’s usually where people get stuck.
A mattress is bulky, floppy, and heavy, and it doesn’t fit in a trash cart. Here’s how mattress disposal works in McMurray and Peters Township, what the township’s curbside bulk program covers, and when a white-glove pickup from our crew is the easier path. Estimates are no-obligation.

Why fall is a good time to get rid of an old mattress
- Guests are coming. If you’re swapping out a tired mattress before Thanksgiving or the holidays, it’s nice to have the old one gone before the new one goes up the stairs.
- The weather is turning. A mattress left on a porch, in a garage, or at the curb in the rain soaks up water and gets heavier, messier, and harder to move. With rain and cooler weather in the forecast later this week, it’s easier to schedule the haul-away now than to wrestle a wet mattress later.
- Spare rooms fill up fast. Clearing the old bed, box spring, and frame now leaves room for whatever the season brings.
Option 1: Peters Township curbside bulk pickup
If you live in McMurray or anywhere in Peters Township, start with the township’s own program. According to the Peters Township Garbage page, regular garbage goes in your township-issued cart, and the exception is bulk items: up to two bulk items per month, picked up during the first full pickup week of the month. Furniture, including mattresses and box springs, is on the township’s list of common bulk items.
A few details matter for mattresses:
- A mattress and a box spring count as two separate items. Put both out in the same month and you’ve used your full two-item limit.
- Timing is fixed. Bulk items go out during the first full pickup week of the month, curbside by 6:00 a.m. on your scheduled day. If you’ve already missed this month’s bulk week, the next one is the first full pickup week of next month. Check the township’s 2026 bulk item calendar for the exact week.
- No call is needed for those two monthly items, according to the township.
- Extra items take extra steps. If you have more than two pieces, the township points residents to Waste Management for additional arrangements. Their contact details are on the township page.
For one mattress, on the right week, with someone strong enough to carry it to the curb, the township program works well. We walk through the full bulk list in our Peters Township bulk item disposal guide.
Option 2: White-glove mattress removal
Curbside pickup still means someone has to get the mattress out of the bedroom, down the stairs, and out to the street, then leave it sitting there until the truck comes. For a lot of homeowners, that’s the part they’d rather skip. That’s where we come in.
When you book mattress removal in McMurray with Iron Bear, our crew comes inside, carries the mattress, box spring, and frame out of the room, and hauls everything away the same visit. No dragging it down the stairs yourself, no waiting for bulk week, no mattress leaning against the house in the rain.
White-glove is how we work on every job:
- A uniformed, courteous crew that treats your home with respect
- Careful handling around walls, railings, doorways, and floors
- Driveway-conscious loading
- A swept, clean space when we leave
We won’t leave your doorstep until you’re satisfied. Where we can, we recycle or donate instead of sending everything to the landfill. You can read more about how we handle mattresses on our main mattress removal page.
Clearing more than a mattress? Do it in one trip
Most mattress jobs aren’t just a mattress. If you’re redoing a guest room or a kid’s room, there’s often an old bed frame, a headboard, a dresser, a nightstand, or a broken recliner going too. Instead of using up months of bulk-pickup allowances, we can take it all at once:
- Bed frames, headboards, dressers, and couches through our furniture removal service
- Old washers, dryers, refrigerators, and freezers through appliance removal
- Boxes, bins, toys, and general household clutter through residential junk removal
If you’re tackling a bigger project, like clearing a whole basement or doing a remodel before the holidays, a roll-off from our dumpster rental service lets you work at your own pace. Ask us which option fits your project when you call.
How to get ready for a mattress pickup
- Strip the bed. Pull off sheets, pillows, and mattress protectors you’re keeping.
- Decide what’s going. Mattress only, or the box spring, frame, and headboard too? Let us know so we bring the right crew.
- Mention stairs and tight turns. Second-floor bedrooms, finished basements, and narrow hallways are no problem, but it helps us plan.
- Send a photo or two. A quick picture of the room helps us give you an accurate no-obligation estimate.
