I’m Devin Orsi, owner of Iron Bear & Co. in Canonsburg. Established 2015 (formerly Richie’s Hauling). If you’re about to rent a roll-off, one of the first questions is where it’s going to sit, and what it might do to your driveway. This is a quick guide to dumpster placement in Canonsburg and Washington County, PA, how to protect your driveway, and what to sort out before delivery day.
A little planning goes a long way. A dumpster is heavy, and a bad placement can mean scraped pavement, blocked access, or a pickup that has to be rescheduled. Estimates are no-obligation, and we’ll help you pick a spot when you call.

Why dumpster placement matters
A loaded roll-off is very heavy, and the truck delivering it needs room to back in and set it down. The spot you pick affects three things: your driveway surface, how easily you can load it, and whether the driver can get it back out when the project is done.
- Driveway wear. Steel rails on asphalt can leave gouges, especially in warm weather when the surface is softer.
- Access. The truck needs a clear approach, enough height for the tilt-and-slide, and room to pull the container back out.
- Loading. A spot close to the door or garage saves a lot of steps on a cleanout or remodel.
How we protect your driveway
White-glove means the details are handled for you. Every Iron Bear dumpster is placed on protective boards to care for your driveway surface, and we place it cleanly and discreetly. We arrive on time for scheduled drop-off and pickup. Take photos of your driveway before delivery if you like, and tell us about anything that’s already cracked or crumbling so we can plan around it.
Our dumpster rental page lists the 10, 15, 20, and 30-yard containers.
Where to put the dumpster
- Your driveway is usually the easiest option. Pick a flat, level stretch with a clear approach from the street. Avoid soft edges and areas over septic tanks or lines.
- Check overhead. Look for low wires, tree branches, and garage door tracks. The truck needs vertical clearance when it tips the container.
- Think about the load. Put the opening where you can reach it from the house, and leave a walkway so you aren’t carrying debris across the lawn.
- Keep the pickup path clear. Move cars out of the driveway before delivery and again before pickup.
- Yard placement is possible, but ask first. Lawns can rut when the ground is soft, so wet-season delivery may call for a different spot.
Permits: private property vs. the street
If the dumpster sits entirely on your own driveway or property, a permit is typically not needed. If the only option is the street or a sidewalk, a permit from the Borough of Canonsburg may be required, and other municipalities have their own rules. HOAs and landlords can also have their own restrictions. When in doubt, call your borough or township office before you book. We’re happy to talk through local placement rules when you call.
What does it cost?
Most dumpster rentals typically run $395 to $725 depending on size: about $395–$495 for a 10-yard, $445–$575 for a 15-yard, $495–$625 for a 20-yard, and $575–$725 for a 30-yard. Your final price depends on the size, the weight of your debris, and how long you keep the container. Heavy debris like roofing shingles, concrete, brick, or dirt can cost more because of the weight. For the full breakdown, see our dumpster rental cost guide for Canonsburg.
Dumpster or a crew?
If you’d rather not load anything yourself, our crew can do the lifting. See dumpster rental vs. junk removal for help choosing, or look at our residential junk removal page. Many projects work best with both.
Dumpster placement FAQ
Will a dumpster damage my driveway?
Any heavy container can mark a driveway if it’s set down directly. That’s why ours go on protective boards. Tell us about existing cracks or soft spots before delivery.
Do I need a permit for a dumpster on my driveway?
On private property, a permit is typically not needed. Street or sidewalk placement may need a permit from your borough or township. Check with them, and we’ll advise on local rules when you book.
Can I put a dumpster on the grass?
Sometimes, but wet or soft ground can rut. Driveways are usually the better choice. Ask us about your yard before you decide.
How long can I keep it?
Standard rentals typically run 7 to 10 days. Let us know up front if your project will run longer so we can plan the pickup.
